The one you feed.

One evening, an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.

He said, "My son, the battle is between two 'wolves' inside us all. One is Evil - It is anger, envy, jealousy, greed, and arrogance. The other is Good - It is peace, love, hope, humility, compassion, and faith."

The grandson thought about this for a while and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf wins?"

To which the old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

Yes, K.Min - I've heard of this tale, too. So true, isn't it?

yasmin said...

yup. this tale was forwarded to me by sukania venugopal - that amazing actress who played mahesh's moher in talentime.

Thank you for the little reminder at this time of the year...

eh! I teringat filem The Missing ada dialog macam ni:

El-Brujo: Inside you are two dogs. One is evil, the other is good. The mean dog fights the good dog all the time. Which one wins?

Samuel Jones: I don't know. Whichever one I feed the most.

El-Brujo: No. They are killing each other. That is what makes you sick.

it is so true kak yasmin!!i love it so much!!i will tell this story to my kids!!!

That is honestest truth kak Min.We cannot feed both at the same time right. But sometimes in deed,we think we feed the Good wolf when intentions made is more to feeding the Evil...situations in denial?confusion?a cover up?Dunno..but I have been there and affected there...
Insya'Allah..may Allah guides us all..amin.Take care kak Min and be well..hugs*

Kak Min ..That's truly enlightening!! How easily we may forget!! :) :)

yes ajami, i think it's probably an ancient red indian story.

i borrowed it for my blog, the writer of "the missing" borrowed it for his screenplay!

in any case, it's a good reminder for those seeking to make resolutions for the new year.

every time i surf the net, i'm surprised at how angry some people are about most everything. i've read people saying, "i hate all of yasmin's films" -- which makes me wonder... if they hated the first one so much, why did they watch the rest?

i've read blogs which go on long tirades of self-righteousness, but they're not even aware that they are revealing such blackened hearts, bereft of love and compassion. maybe they've been feeding the wrong wolf.

only allah knows.

Assalaamu'alaikum Kak Yasmin, yes2, what you said is true, sometimes even when we're doing charitable acts we may end up feeding the wrong wolf if the intention is to show off in the end, right?

May Allah Guide our intentions to be solely for Him (:

Thanks for this advice.
Love and hate is inside everyone.
I'm guilty for hate.
I always stop paying attention to people that I hate and in the end I just forget about them and what has happened.

Kalau dah benci, kenapa ambil perhatian pada orang/perkara yang kita benci?

Oh, ada orang benci semua filem Puan? Tapi sempat pula nak tengok semua. Bodoh kan?

Hate is a burden.

p/s: just to share a thought that my mum taught me since i was child..

take care kak min...

Hi Kak Yasmin ! : )

Friends of earth, just a small reminder, accusing someone of having "anger, envy, jealousy, greed, and arrogance", is way, way worse than actually having those traits.

being judgemental is by far the worse.

I am sure there are a lot of people with " evil " but before anything, search deep within whether you yourself, are any better.

I have seen and heard of people with much hatred, and go on and on about them but maybe i fail 2 realize at times, my mistakes as well or if i am any better.

Gosh, kak yasmin, sometimes kan, it is sad to hear of people saying look! " he is so arrogant ", " look, she is just jealous ! ", or judging someone based on their physical appearance without actually knowing of that person inside and out. ( them thinking others are feeding " evil " when in fact they are, themselves. )

Interestingly though, kak Yasmin, as i grow older, i find that more and more positive and less judgemental people appearing.

God is greatlah, kan?

yasmin said...

well yes, wai meng. god has said that the blackness of one's heart can show on one's face. actually, with writers and bloggers too, sometimes if we scan through past postings perhaps we can have an idea of the person's heart. some are judgmental, some are quick to condemn others, some are self-pitying, some are holier-than-thou, some are perpetually angry. for me, i find that very often when i am angry, i am really angry with myself.

i like this wolf story because i can use it to remind myself of my own faults. no doubt some people will feel defensive about it, but then they have to figure out for themselves exactly what it is that they're defending.

Wai Meng said...

i honestly think that i am quite judgemental and hopefully through time, i can change that.

and self - pity is also the worse kind of behavior, one should never have.

and yeah, when i said " ( them thinking others are feeding " evil " when in fact they are, themselves. )", i was actually referring to myself.

Haha, you see, by sharing this, i am indirectly reminded. : )

If I ask "how come hysteria's lesbian kissing scene got through the consorship board and muallaf's noble messages did not?", would that feed the jealousy/envy emotion?

my evil wolf is so well fed, he's morbidly obese and lazy.

Good stuff Ms. Yasmin

kak yasmin, i love that wolf story! first came across it in a book, "the year of pleasures". i like how such a simple story effectively reminds me that ultimately, i have to take active responsibility for my good/badness, rather than blaming others or circumstances.

have fun in bali! :)
