Wish us well on tonight's charity screening for Mercy Malaysia's work in Gaza.

talentimeposter

We didn't want to complicate things by opening it to the public. Handling cash is dicey. So we decided to keep it simple by inviting a select group of corporations to donate and attend the very first theatrical screening of our new film "Talentime".

It's a 320-seater cinema hall, but we didn't really care if only 7 people turned up, as long as they brought cheques with them. The corporations we invited were given no "minimum amount" instructions, and were told they could send up to 30 or 40 people.

Response has been good, alhamdulillah.

We saw the print yesterday at a local colour lab studio and it looked beautiful, thank God. Jaclyn Victor's performance was particularly outstanding on big screen. That girl can go far, inshaallah.

My producer and I will most likely be sitting at the back of the hall, anxiously watching the audience reactions throughout our 1 hour 57 minute film.

The seats are almost fully taken, with some room to spare for our main cast. Jac, Mahesh, Kahoe, Pamela, Elza, Kak Azean, and Ida Nerina might come. Mohd Syafie, unfortunately, is in Sarawak at a shoot.

May Allah guide us in making things run smoothly tonight. Ameen, ya rabbal aalameen.

(ps: "Talentime" is scheduled for general theatrical release on March 26th, 2009. "Muallaf" will be back, by popular demand, in Singapore, from February 26th.)

salaam, all.

muallaf HAS been approved by lembaga penapisan filem with NO cuts. alhamdulillah.

however, they want me to mute the sound in 3 parts. but don't worry, these mutings do not interrupt the flow of the story in any way.

we're presently waiting for astro's verdict on their acquisition of muallaf.

and no, i don't plan to release it at the cinemas.

Helo. So not in cinemas lah? Its okay, as long as I get to watch it.

In that case i need to go to Singapore :(

kak, u're truy God-sent!

i'm so thankful that muallaf is coming back to s'pore. i just had a conversation with my colleague last night. she's a non-muslim and, no, she didn't hear about muallaf from me - from her fellow church friend.

she told me that work has been keeping her busy and she only managed to go picturehouse on christmas, eagerly to watch muallaf. alas! it ended the day before. of course, i'll let her know muallaf is coming back.

i don't mind watching muallaf again but with my newborn prince, i'll end up breastfeeding him in the theatre. haha

hope to know the outcome of talentime charity screening. insya Allah, the charity screening brings in great returns for He listens to those who pleads.

Just came back from watching "SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE"
As I was watching it, I taught of you.I taught, would Talentime be like "SLUMDOG" ?

P/S : slumdog millionaire is entertainingly brilliant.

kak yasmin

just a question.. is talentime an in joke in any shape and form?

i mean you use NEW UNTESTED (might not be that talented) talents for a TALENTIME movie. so in a way you are recreating a real talentime situation in a movie.

confused yet?

allow me to explain.. i've been to quite a few talentime since i AM a child of the 80's. we use to have loads of this talentime shows then. and out of 80 contestant maybe only 7 are really talented. so can i expect the same from some of the "actors" in this movie

this is an honest question. i think you are a very crafty and talented person. you always try to slide in in jokes and symbolism in your movie.

looking forward to your reply Yasmin..

Hi, Malaywood. I too just saw slumdog yesterday. and I am still talking about it to my friends. It is SO incredibly brilliant! At first i thought only a British or European director could pull off something as beautiful as this. Then again I thought of our Madam Yasmin - I bet she can and hope one day she will.

K.Yasmin - all the best on your fundraising drive. Just to let you know I was only able to collect RM1506 and already send to Mercy. No star power maahh..!

Mmm knp tak tayang kat panggung.. x feel la... anyway nanti saya tggu kat astro er... tak sabo betul..

anyway, rasa jeles pulak filem Slumdog Millionaire masuk Oscar w'pun pengarahnya org putih (syarat oscar). mgkin filem tu masuk oscar sbb ada propaganda pasal yg buruk2kan pasal India atau org Islam dalam filem tu (tak pandai sgt 'membaca' filem) walluhualam..

Agak2nya bila Kak Min nak hantar filem M'sia kat Oscar at least utk kategori Best Foreign Languange Film???..setelah PGL gagal ke top 5 best foreign Film tu...

Nak tgk Muallaf...can't wait. I juz wanna see the bit where ppl keep saying that Yasmin has disgraced the name of our religion as she pointed out that all religion is the same. Whereas it not, kan Yasmin?

Muallaf will be screened for 2nd time in Singapore??!! Warghh!! Bila org kat Malaysia nk dapat tengok ni?? Frustnya!!

yasmin said...

salaam, naz & anya.

there is nothing in muallaf that declares all religions are the same. some stupid journalist from utusan mistook quranic verses for verses from the bible, and he didn't even bother to check it up.

don't worry, inshaallah, muallaf will be out on astro soon.

Andy Gomez,

I don't mean to sound harsh, if I were in yasmin's shoes, i will be shitting bricks.
You have not even met her and you are calling her "Mak".
What's that about?
I would understand it if her cast like Mahesh, KaHoe, Nani and Hafiz call her "Mak" but someone who have not met her....
It's a bit freaky...

So long no new article. I read in facebook, you are doing a commercial in Singapore. Do share with us....

Kris Law said...

I'm an awful person. Really I am. Do you think I'm a bad person, Yasmin?

I bought a new bag recently because the old one got torn. All the Indon ladies selling food at the food court were admiring my new bag. Since I'm a friendly person (and some of them saw me on TV before), I tends to get a bit personal with some of them and chit chat for not wanting to appear a snob. One particular Indon lady continuously pestered me to get her the exact same bag I was carrying. I told her it costs this much, and she said she could only pay this much. Quickly I told her she better find another bag that suits her budget. But she continues to push and pestered me to get her the exact same bag as mine! How tiresome....

The next day, I went to the foodcourt again to eat, and suddenly felt my bag was pulled so hardly from behind. When I turned, I saw the vengeful Indon lady still holding my bag. I screamed at her and said this is a new bag! Any hard pulling could snap the handle! She then ran back to her food quarters to hide.

Knowing she needs to learn her lesson, I went to the Indon lady's food quarter the next day, where the spread of her food was open for serving. Suddenly I got the idea, and took the giant ladle from the spread. I waited for the moment she walked into the quarter. When she arrived and I saw her looking at me holding the ladle, I threw the ladle onto the floor which landed with a loud tinkle, like the glass breaking.

I waited to see her expression, and she looked like she was holding herself from bursting out. She then, calmly said "It's OK, no problem". Right then, I felt a tinge of guilt. I walked off from her quarter and sat at the table where I can view her at a distance. It's hard to have a proper meal when knowing your enemy's presence is nearby.

After my meal, I walked towards her quarters and confronted her. I told her I'm not a rich person, and she must not take advantage of me just because I've appeared onscreen before. After that, I waved at her and wished her goodbye.

Kak Min, I loved the songs on Talentime. I was told Aizat and Atilia sang them - and that Pete Teo wrote them. Is that true? I am a big fan of Pete's [I love his music!]. But there is so little information on him available. What is it like working with him? What's he like? Please tell me... :)

Thanks kak. You rock!

Some comments are amusing. Its like a comment blogspot for a few here.

Madam, congratulations on the collection. I hope bit by bit, we help in any way we can. I try not to rely on the commercial donation boxes cos I know Mercy goes directly there with the effort of Dr. Jemilah, so mine goes straight to Mercy. However, what we want is to generate this global energy to support those in need.

And another congratulations for making it in Bollywood World.

Btw, I don't think Slumdog Millionaire is anything like Talentime, seriously the plot is so different. But I love both in their own special way.

hi kak yasmin! so any words on talentime screening in singapore?

Anonymous said...

As'kum yasmin ahmad,

firstly, what should we, the young people, call u? i respect u so much and i feel rude to call u just with ur name.is it ok for us to call u untie?(i sincerely ask this.)

sorry, i want to ask you a lot here.dying to know!hehee

just wondering actually, was that one of vince's sister in talentime?how did u discover her talent?

is it ur trend, trademark or pleasure to just have actors with less publicity?
except maybe for today's Sharifah Amani and Jac. She is so famous now, but nobody knows S.Amani before she acted in your film, and true,Jac is a much publicized singer, but still, a first timer actor.

are u really trying to make ur movie as 'dull' as possible?
i do not know the exact film-people's phrase, sorry, but it all seem dull and slow-paced for me.will u soon be directing a very commercial movie in any chance?

will appreciate your answers so much, yasmin. i admire your works. wish you the very best for talentime. cant wait for it.

Dear Yasmin,

I jumped at the sight of the Talentime trailer. I smiled with pride when I see the posters, billboards. I even cry (feeling touched) just by reading a review that was published and being done by the Star on the film.

I am not very good with my words but I really wanna thank you for making all the films / advertisements / short film that you've made. I dare not say I have watched it all, but I dare say I watch enough to make me a loyal fan of your work. I heard about Rabun... watched Sepet, Gubra, Mukhsin, waiting to get my hands on Muallaf (darn the local cinemas for not showing it), watched Talentime (on the date of release with my fellow friends who is smart enough to enjoy local films) and don't mention all the awards you've done for Petronas all these years.

I'll cut short and jump straight to Talentime. I just simply LOVE it. I laughed, I cried, in love with the story, the actors and of course, the amazing SOUNDTRACK. Whether it's English, Malay, Chinese, Tamil... I enjoy it all. Can't wait to get my hands on the original VCD/DVD & OST!

I don't know how you do it, but you make it seem so easy... Every action, every dialogue, every scene reflects the Malaysian life.

To be honest, I don't know where i'm really heading with my comments... but to put a long story short, THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU'VE DONE FOR MALAYSIA!

Always a supporter/fan,
Lim May Szin (Mayz)

and p/s: Kahoe, Syafie, Mahesh, Choo Seong... aww! They are just so lovable!
