It's Talentime ! We'll masuk JB this Saturday. For Talentime and makan as always.
We watched "Departures" .We departed the cinema thinking when Maly films will reach that level.
If Talentime is showing in Singapore, who will bring it in?
LHP or Grand Brilliance.Just curious.

Thanks a lot.

"CINEMA NON GRATA"

Selecting a specific film to watch in cineplexes is like choosing which clique membership to join into. For horror or romantic films, you have lovey-dovey couples. For Hollywood epics, you have group of friends or teens. For a Yasmin Ahmad film, very possibly you have visitors from this blog.

I asked a few of my movie buff friends to accompany me to watch Tale-n-time this Thursday when it opens, because I get easily embarassed if I go watch alone because some other people in the audience (whom I am SURE to be frequent visitors to this blog) might spot my face in the cinema and approach me and interrogated me about my past history or possibly something else.

Guess what? It's extremely difficult to get someone to watch a local film at a specific time! Different case, if it's big budget Hollywood film. But I will find the most uncommon and most unpopular time to watch it anyway, because i want to prove to YOU that I'm a good sport.

PS: You get my ticket vote.

"I CRIED"

I cried. When I see Talentime commercial with SilkyGirl and amazed at how an ugly sad Melor turns beautiful happy.

I cried. When I see over 700 people follows this blog, and could roughly estimates how well Talentime would do.

I cried. When I read so many praises and responses in this blog, and how mine could be drown (or censored for unfounded fear) in this sea of comments and made even more insignificant with my reputable past rebellion.

I cried. When I've already booked a ticket to watch Talentime, and wonder how in the coldness of the cineplex I would react with the story and my own missed credit on the screen.

I cried. When I watched an Earth Hour commercial and read the question "Who says we are divided?" and knowing deep inside the answer remains the same.

I cried. No matter how many Yasmin Ahmad films I've watched, a full closeness is never really felt between myself and the other races.

I cried. Knowing there's future only in the films made and a future in reality is such a far cry.

I cried. Because I do many wrong things in my life, but one thing I never regret is speaking my honest mind when I'm wronged.

Good Day Yasmin!

I'm glad to finally have the chance to leave you a note in this space. I will definitely be watching Talentime and just empty my thoughts and emotions before the start of Talentime in anticipation of what it has to offer the mind and the heart! I say this simply because the aftermath of Sepet left an unusually strange consensus or rather the meetings of mind and heart- which I think is rare. I absolutely love the 'openess' of the malay family potrayed in Sepet and could not help think how brilliant your scripts were on the 'scholarship' awarded to Oked. How can one not agree with obvious points in Sepet? But then again, viewers have different 'absorbing' capacity hence the difference in opinions about Sepet. Whatever the case maybe, Sepet - I love!
Bottom line,I fell in love with your work in the midst of watching Sepet and from there on I know that you have much more to offer and I will be keeping myself 'empty' for the muses that you have to offer in your coming productions.
Talentime, here we come!
God bless...

it was awesome...!!!!
when the casts speak in tamil, it sort of reminded me of my upbringing....i was touch and proud indeed. i've never really embraced my indian roots due to the fact that my dad is a eurasian.
this time, i'm actually proud that i can understand every single word the cast spoke (though my tamil is not that good)

it was an awesome experience!!!

yes ur movies affect me..i've been playing O Re Piyar over and over..anyway, any plan to release the OST?

mubaraq ahmad said...

"if u want me to stop seeing her, I will, but teach my heart how to forget her" off-sort, Mahesh

1. big cinema, small crowd.
2. why 'melor' casted is beyond me, her emotions are not well coached, a shocker coming from u. and all 3 girls looked like kids from 3 different marriages.
3. no fatimah abu bakar's girl(s)?! hmmm...
4. are u sure adibah is human?! she's too talented!
5. sarcasm as the language, most of the movie, is so you.
6. what is granny is a puzzled. she has worldwide ascent in her speech.
7. managed to weave u'r dogism in here, clever!
8. yu hang with no dialogue and in a single short?! ah beng framed half bodied? come on yasmin!!!
9. too many unsolved issues... cut us some slack yasmin... don't tell me u'r in on sequels as well?!
10. maybe a musicale afterwards?! you've seem right on the track. but sound mixing was just not believable, having studio-engineered vocals as playbacks for the school stage performances... and what's with hafiz having harmony when he sang during the audition?! or maybe it came from the moviegoers... I wonder.
11. datin kalsom showing up just to reveal what mei lin's true identity is and the sudden trip to cameron?! a bit of a loose end there.
12. is jit murad supposedly an incarnation of the angel of death?! maybe I'm thinking too much.
13. you made tamil sounds delicious!
14. vimala was a show stealer, but her character was underdeveloped. a regular I hoped after this. is mahesh's mother, bayan of PGLTM 1st?!
15. too much characters with loose focus on the subjects. the grumpy dr, the strict father, mahesh's uncle's clueless bride, indian teacher wearing the singkat jubah (or is he a priest of sort?!)
16. lemme breath and think... I'll come back if I have anything else.

p/s: what did mahesh say on the stairs?! not all of us speak signs u know...

Salam Yasmin & bloggers

I was unwell today but I told my son that we should watch Talentime. Booked the tickets and watched it at TGV Cheras. I must say I was worried coz at the beginning it was quite slow and boring. As the movie picked up, wow... I must say the sound track O re piya combined with the scene of Mahesh.. I have no words to discribe my feelings. Both my son (he's 21) & I uttered the word Wow!! the very minuted the song was played. It says all...

Congratulations & well done

hi mubaraq

if you want everything laid down for you, well watch a hindi movie instead

yasmin said...

hehe! mubaraq, you're cute.

"all 3 girls looked like kids from 3 different marriages."

- you should see my adik-beradik!

"what is granny is a puzzled. she has worldwide ascent in her speech."

- granny does not have a worldwide accent. she is a yorkshire woman who obviously married a malay man, melur's grandfather.

"too many unsolved issues... cut us some slack yasmin... don't tell me u'r in on sequels as well?!"

- cinema is not a mathematical equation to solve issues, dear. it is a sketch to express its maker's feelings and concerns, many of which will never be solved.

"sound mixing was just not believable, having studio-engineered vocals as playbacks for the school stage performances... and what's with hafiz having harmony when he sang during the audition"

- this is a perfectly acceptable way to enhance "live" music in films, yang. it's a practice as old as the hills!

"what did mahesh say on the stairs?! not all of us speak signs u know..."

- glad you asked this question! now, please try and find out what he said. it's beautiful.

finally, thanks for watching talentime, dear. salaam.

Thank you so much for coming up with such good stories and bringing up current issues in Malaysia that do need to be brought up. Continue giving us Malaysians the good movies our country needs!

amethyst said...

i get whut mubaraq is saying about d singing (kot ar).. n yeah i think it'll have more impact if melur n hafiz could lip sync better..

anyway, talentime is indeed ur best yet.. waiting for muallaf jer..

TT,

1. sharing is caring.
2. why Hindi movies always get the blame and shame?! if oscars is the yardstick in measuring quality movies (as many believes) then (at least) they got 3 nominated. stop baseless movie labeling. a movie (to me, at least) is either good or bad. a good movie, what ever language/ setting/ ethnicity used is fairly enjoyable to all men.

min,

hehe! mubaraq, you're cute.
~ me = blushin'!

- granny does not have a worldwide accent. she is a yorkshire woman who obviously married a malay man, melur's grandfather.
~ i know u embed this fact in one of the lines. its just dat granny sometimes sounded Australian and at times US. but she's definitely malaysian movie's mrs doubtfire. witty and funny!

- cinema is not a mathematical equation to solve issues, dear. it is a sketch to express its maker's feelings and concerns, many of which will never be solved.
~ i know movie is a canvas. but presenting an abstract one to a mixed audience is always a gamble. too bad/ such waste if people just couldn't receive it as it is/ what it represents.

- this is a perfectly acceptable way to enhance "live" music in films, yang. it's a practice as old as the hills!
~ definitely the oldest trick in the book. but u're yasmin ahmad, we expect (at least more) realism than just plain movie making.

- glad you asked this question! now, please try and find out what he said. it's beautiful.
~ anyone?! help2x... is there any software/ website that can do dat? i'm a typical m'sian who champion spoonfeedings... he he he

...besides, everyone else said good things, and i can't expect 100% approval from everyone kan? one man's meat is another man's poison
~ this is the attitude that the M'sian (entertainment) industry should have. open and appraise criticism. fazakkir, inna zikr tanfa'ul mukminin [keep reminding(u'r fellow men),as reminders benefit those with faiths]

watched it yesterday at gsc midv, the 2pm show with my indian gf and her pet sister, the movie is really great but i just wished u could show more on Kahoe his a pretty interesting character to developed, i think 3 of us laughed and also cried (including me, a guy who shows emotion is strong right? :P) esp when mahesh got scolded and when the song o re piya came on, i think u managed to blend the music rightly with the movie, and the theme, it really reflects what me and my gf feels, and i think what we afraid we will face in the future if we are destined to be so, you really inspire us just like uncle ganesh words :) at first i thought sepet was better but after awhile, i think talentime is equivalent or not better, thank you for keeping me believing in malaysia made movie with the likes of yours and afdlin shauki, il write a review on my blog soon, kudos :)

@pan zhafr@n said...

and about syafie aka hafiz his brilliant as always, i didnt forget him just that i dont think i need to mention him cos we all know his a great actor, and thanks for the loads of sarcasm in the movie, the most beautiful scene in the movie?

is that coincidence? :)

budleee said...

yey! baru tgk smlm :D

i like it as usual, full of honesty, a touching a few racial issues without overdoing it, funny but quite sad at the same time :D. I love it! however perhaps i am the only few that appreciates the cinematograpy and camera angles of rabun and sepet.

and like everyone else. I want to obtain the soundtrack too :D

yasmin said...

budleee, the soundtrack should be out in a week or so, inshaallah. thanks for watching the film.

I am a fan of your movies. Where can I purchase original DVDs of your movies Rabun, Muallaf and Talentime? I already have Sepet, Gubra and Mukhsin. Thank you

yasmin said...

muallaf dvd should be out about a month after its theatrical release in july, inshaallah. talentime too, i think.

crux said...

salam, all...

i have to agree somewhat with mubaraq, though it doesnt change one bit how talentime is STILL my number 1 amongst all ur movies kak min.like ive told u before, my personal fav would be talentime, muallaf and rabun, skipping sept, gubra and mukhsin.

why?

simply, one man's meat is another's poison.

but i like the straightforwardness of mubaraq. that's how our film industry could be stronger, with audiences that say what they think out loud, regardless whether the director is a personal favourite or not.

and dont diss hindi, im a penangite (or at least too many penang blood in me to be one), and i love a LOT of hindi movies. especially now, where there are loads AND loads of new movies that has so much weight, it would flatten a whale!

but again, one man's meat is another's poison.

and tomorrow who's joining lagi?kak min join tak?

salam.

Kak Min,

Saya dah tengok Talentime on the opening day. Yippe!

Good job!

But.. Masa scene Hafiz (Syafie) solat di dalam masjid, Syafie tamatkan solat dengan memberi salam ke arah kiri sebelum ke arah kanan. Did u notice that? Atau saya tersalah pandang?

Adakah ia disengajakan? Atau kesilapan? Atau something else?

Kak Yasmin, I've seen this movie last night at Kinta City, Ipoh.

It was a great movie. Two thumbs up for you.

And, fyi, there's 1 row behind me that is full with Anderson boys who are so excited seeing their school in the movie.

Anyway, I love the movie. It's simple, light and easy to understand. But, somehow I need some clarification with you about a few scenes:

1. The scene where Mahesh is 'talking' Melur and suddenly there are a lot of babies in front of them.

2. The scene where the 'invisible' man come and give strawberry to Hafiz's mother.

Pls, eventhough if you think it is a stupid question, but I'm eager to know. :D

ameirul azraie bin mustadza said...

And one more think, apa imej doktor yang jaga mak Mohsin tu cuba sampaikan?

Do you want to tell the audience to that all doctors are grumpy?

yasmin said...

salaam, ameirul.

1. The scene where Mahesh is 'talking' Melur and suddenly there are a lot of babies in front of them.

- i don't know about anyone else here, but when i fell in love with someone i wanted to spend the rest of my life with, i started to notice things i never noticed before. babies, diapers, bridal gown shops, etc. i wanted that scene to be a sort of heightened sense of reality.

2. The scene where the 'invisible' man come and give strawberry to Hafiz's mother.

- i wanted to see if i could hint at impending death, without showing someone saying, "you're about to die!" that scene seemed to work on some people. did it work for you?

.

Hi Kak Yasmin

I popped by 1utama to watch Talentime this morning, it was brilliant, i loved it!

IMO, the cast you chose suits the movie just fine, but to each his own i suppose. I especially loved the songs (of course!)

Wondering what is the name of the first song that was sang by Hafiz, i do hope that it would be available for downloading!

Cheers and all the best,

i wish i could write amazing words just like the others but, i can only come up with these..
thank you so much for this latest 'gift' of yours.
thank you for casting an amazing ensemble of experienced actors (mahesh's mother is one AMAZING actress)
thank you for lining up fresh and raw talents such as melur, mahesh and that er-hu guy.
thank you so much for justifying jac's acting ability in this movie (she really really can act. i'm still in awe)
thank you for making syafiq in class of his own.
thank you for depicting diversity in this film.
and most of all, thank you for making NOT JUST ANOTHER MALAY MOVIE.

p/s I'm listening o re piya at the moment and can't get enuff of it. Btw, is there any chance that you'll be doing OST for talentime.

the strawberries...

(nothingness) said...

wah. so many spoilers!

the angel of death was very obvious when we discover that hafiz could not see him. if anything the strawberries gave me this uncomfortable feeling knowing that was her last moment.

i just realized that most of your films have a suggestion of the supernatural:- the cat in muallaf, the invisible man in talentime, the phone call in sepet, and that weird thing the bilal did in gubra.

yasmin said...

... not to mention the dead man joining everyone to play koba in rabun, and mukhsin floating into the air in mukhsin...

The best thing about your movies, its always let me enjoy every seconds on its. Even in small scene (like woman sidai underwear in Mukhsin-even that scene).

Plus u are great in putting everything together- great casts (eventhough from different background), mixed cultures, great locations (u luv Ipoh haa...), right things to say at the right moment!!!!- u give great opportunity to your audience to THINK with ur interpretation of life....

Actually, I don't expect so much from Talentime since my one and only heroin-Sharifah Amani not in the movie. But, I found out that even with new faces u can do anything. Like Shafie Naswip, I watched all of his telemovies/ drama, but still I strongly believe he is better in your movies...

Bottom line is u r one and only my favorite film director in Malaysia!!! Keep up ur great work!!

The children have been badgering us to take them to watch Talentime after seeing the trailer . And so we all trooped to Sunway Carnival City in mainland Penang. They giggled a lot. My wife cried more than me. And the little one missed the baby scene, as he was fast asleep by then. Must say Talentime is my kind of movie, and so agreeable. I think you bring out the best in Atillia and Aizat too. Will watch again to understand better some of the not-so-straightforward scenes.
