Four years ago, when Sepet came under fire from Berita Harian, RTM, and even the then Minister of Culture, it was given the Best Asian Film award at the 18th Tokyo International Film Festival.
Then just last year, the 21st TIFF gave Muallaf a Special Mention in the Asian-Middle Eastern section, while here at home, it was facing a possible ban.
Is it any wonder, then, that when they wrote and asked us for Talentime, I was both touched and thrilled?
You may find this hard to believe, but I never ever think about festivals or awards while I'm writing a script or making a film. But given the flak I get back home sometimes, you cannot blame me for feeling at least a little vindicated when foreign festivals like Tokyo seek my permission to celebrate our films.
Allah is indeed great.

it will be a great day for me!
i miss Tokyo , and i miss Talentime (and great movies)
Great work for Yasmin.
Thumb up for you!
tahniah kak min... talentime deserves every recognition outside Malaysia. i still can't get over the fact that it received lukewarm response. only when the outside world endorses it, then malaysians will flock to buy the DVD.
This is a great news! It is indeed frustrating that most of the media, politician, and decision makers in this country do not understand films, but be rest assured that there is a legion of Malaysian fans who do appreciate and love your works, myself being one of them.
Best wishes to you, and 'Talentime' at Tokyo.
hej! Yasmin...congrats!
Congrats!! good for U.... I Will always be supporting U n Ur films. :-)
where can i get your cds or dvds for your films? i missed out Gubra and Talentime. but i really wanna watch Muallaf tho, its sad that its somehow ban here.
salam,
congrats, Kak Min.
'Talentime' is your masterpiece.
what can i say, some times, good things are scrutinized and criticized before they are known for their value. your films are among the best in our local industry. wait. let me rephrase that. your works are the best locally, and internationally.
I love watching your films Kak Min. It's really what I need when it come to great movies. May Allah always bless u Kak Min, forever and always.

Congrats, you deserve it though its a shame that our own Country can be so blind to appreciate and encourage such talent. I have been trying to purschase the Talentime DVD for my sister who lives abroad (since I was raving about it). I can't find it...will it ever be released on DVD in Malaysia?
good things deserve recognition so as to pose a reminder that what you're doing is really worthwhile and appreciated, to keep you going on i guess. one of the many ways to tell you, people love your work!
jane, i've watched departures 7 times! 4 times in singapore, once in hong kong, and twice in KL.
talentime soundtrack cd is available out there. the dvd won't be out til later this year.
Was Talentime shown in Singapore? Did I miss it??
no, ikram. you didn't miss it. insyaallah it should be out in singapore in the next 2 months or so.
what about muallaf dvd?
muallaf dvd not til next year, dear.
how do you do it, kak yasmin? (may i call you that? hehe) how do you face all this adversity from your own people, and still make films? i never understood why they didn't appreciate you. sure, you don't fit into their comfort zone but isn't that the point? what i am amazed about is how you're still doing films and living in malaysia. if it was me, i'd either quit it altogether or move out where i am more appreciated.
so how DO you do it?
that's easy, atikah. i don't do it for them. i do it for allah, for my parents, for the people who DO like my films in whichever part of the world they may be, and i do it for me.
Alhamdulillah... Kak Min;
yes, big alhamdulillah.
i'm absolutely impress with you kak yasmin..absolutely...may Allah bless you kak...(^_^)

off topic but isn't this an ad you did??
yes, i directed that.
Love your movies. Sad that there are some who don't appreciate it. Maybe they are more 'conservative' or 'too sensitive'.
By the way just bought the Talentime soundtrack last week. Luv it.
Kat malaysia ni kak min... minta maaf cakaplah...
"Kalau dah mati baru orang nak appreciate."
How's Datuk Yasmin Ahmad sound to you?
Probably nothing... Coz you probably dead by then!
"Pemergiannya merupakan satu kehilangan besar pada negara. Beliau telah membuka mata kita pada erti sebenar perfileman. Bagaimana seni, penceritaan dan aspek komersil boleh bergabung menjadi satu..."
Yeah... right...
saya tak pernah mengejar title. takut riak.
